hey there. im a technical producer (aka board op) for a news/talk radio station (see my userinfo for more details). anyway, im currently in a position to do some actual production (and make a fair bit of extra money each month) and am in the process of learning ProTools. unfortunately im having to teach it to myself, and i am mostly mac illiterate.

i have been shown how to capture audio on this thing once. now that im attempting to do it alone, however im having issues.

-i have a new folder opened up with multiple tracks on it.
-i have been told that protools will capture from anything on the board that i have potted up
-i have the mini player potted up and playing
-the little box attached to the mac is on and i have the correct source(s) selected
-the red record button is on and then i hit the spacebar to start it - then began playing the mini

no levels - not recording. cant seem to capture any audio.
anyone know what im doing wrong or have any suggestions as to how to remedy this issue? thanks.

Incoherence [29 Mar 2006|11:34am]

confuseme

My brother and I (a.k.a. OMG Audio) have finally finished the commercial release of our audio visualization / analysis tool, Incoherence. (Scroll down on that page for free plug-ins.) The idea is to display a picture of the stereo image of your mix, broken out by frequency. After talking to some producers and engineers, we realized that a lot of people are imagining something like this while they work, and we figured, why not make a tool so they can see what they're doing?

Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Do you think this is something people would find useful?

Hyper-Sonic Sound

This technology essentially makes the same connection in audio wave travel taht the evolution of the laser did for the emission of light. Imagine being able to broadcast a straight and narrow stream of SOUND like that of a laser that travels in a single beam of it's waves instead of streading out and directing the sound via acoustics.

This will re-define audio engineering and will make yet another distinction between digital and analogue.

Hey everyone, I use FLStudio to produce tracks sometimes, and I find that FLStudio usually is deficient in the higher frequency ranges, it feels too bass-heavy and empty. It's not an EQ problem because I export aall tracks seperately to master them in SoundForge and arrange them in Acid Pro 4.0.

Any suggestions?

Also - I've been playing with REASON 2.5 - what the hell do the "Spider" modules do?

Help! [11 Sep 2004|08:17pm]

I just bought Protools, and the first thing it says is to disable hyperthreading in the BIOS. I have an HP Pavillion a450n with hyperthreading. I went into the BIOS, but there's no option to disable hyperthreading. I called HP support, no luck. How do I do it? THanks!

Dispatches From The Future! [21 Jul 2004|12:30am]

avariceglutton
Dear Friends In Sound and Science. I want to let you know about a radio program you should listen to! It's called Dispatches From The Future. "Bringing you the best in experimental sound collage and musique concrete since the year 2036!" Tonight's special Cantonese Pop Music Segment features Hong Kong DJ Nikki S. Lau. And that's not all, after that segment there will be the usual unusual sounds and musics! Political Unrest! Race Riots! Mr. Rogers! Science Fiction Soundscapes! Ray Guns! Old Fashioned Melo-Drama! Live and streaming on the intro-web-net. Starts at 3 AM Eastern US Standard Time! Ends at 6 AM Eastern Standard Us Time! That's 3 hours from now. Tune In. Enslave your ears.

"Hark, Followers! The time has come once again to rejoice, to lay down thy slings, to free thyself from the fetters of un-enlightenment. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest! If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink! He that believeth on us is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten sound. That name I speak is DISPATCHES FROM THE FUTURE. There are some who listen not upon thy sacred airwaves frequency 88.9 modulation! Their throat is an open sephulchre; with their tongues thay have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips; Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace, they have not known! The peace of the word from 2036. Know it well. Deliver me unto this word LATE TONIGHT! (wednesday morning) 3am - 6am! On W.E.R.S.! That's W.elbutrin, E.phedra, R.ophynol, and S.odium pentethol! You Need Salvation!"

technical question [12 Apr 2004|02:51am]

[ mood | tired ]

So Im learning how to record. I have a 8-track mixer, I send the mixer with a stereo cable to my computers sound card, then I use computer software to record and edit. I just got some new rack equipment (compressor, reverb, etc) and I was kinda having trouble on where in the chain I should put the rack equipment. Here are the three possibilities I tried out:

A) Amp, Mixing Board, Rack Equipment, Computer

B) Amp, Rack Equipment, Mixing Board, Computer

C) Rack Equipment, Amp, Mixing Board, Computer

Which sequence would yield the best results; Any ideas? Id really appreciate it.

(P.S. Right now I own a really old/shitty hand me down mixer and I'm looking for a new one. Can anyone give me advice on who makes really good mixing boards and what features I should look for when buying one?)

I just mailed out the masters of my new album Miles From Home to be manufactured.
I went through Disk Faktory, and will give you my results on the job they did.
I supplied 300dpi tiffs for my art files, and will be getting their 'Super ProPak' packaging.

Hope it comes out nicely!
I've been working on this cd for about a year.

I was reading through my latest issue of Tape Op, particularly the fantastic interview with Andy Johns. He gave a tip as to what he does as far as guitar cabinet recordings, which was using two SM-57's and point one directly at the speaker you've choosen, and then pointing the other at a 45-degree angle. I was experimenting with this set-up this weekend. Instead of using two SM-57's, I used my two Oktava MK-012's. I X-Y'd the microphones and compressed them a little bit with a Blue Max. The end result was quite decent.

I usually find record guitar cabinets to be the hardest part. Once I get two SM-57's, I'm going to probably try them out. I have one sitting in my closet right now, I don't have much use for it as of now.
